I explain how Señora Galindo called Mami last night and how Iâm getting an invitation too. âShe says our invitations got misplaced by mistake.â
We both know it was not a mistake.
âAt least we get to go,â he says. âNow all I need to do is find Esme the perfect welcome-to-the-neighborhood gift. Then sheâll know JazmÃn was wrong about me.â He flips to another section of his notebook. âIâve narrowed it down to five ideas.â
I try to peek at Pabloâs list, but he slams the notebook shut.
âDonât worry, I already have my own list,â I fib. âAnd Esmeâs going to love my gift best.â
I turn and march into the classroom.
Pablo follows close behind. âHow can you be so sure you know what she likes? Youâve barely talked to her.â
âWell, neither have you,â I say as I take my seat.
Luckily, Ms. Coleman gives us a chance to fix that. Later that morning, when itâs time for social studies, she divides the class into small groups. âEsme, why donât you join Catalina and Pablo?â she says.
We slide our desks over to make room, but Esme doesnât move. She looks down at the floor and twists one of her braids.
JazmÃn raises her hand. âMs. Coleman,â she says before sheâs even called on. âShouldnât Esme be in my group? Since sheâs my cousin?â
Pablo looks at me, eyes wide. âSee? Just like Secrets of the Castle,â he murmurs.
Ms. Coleman stands beside JazmÃnâs desk. âItâs very thoughtful of you to look out for your cousin. But it will be good for Esme to make other friends too. And Catalina and Pablo will take good care of her.â She turns to us. âWonât you?â
We nod eagerly. Finally Esme moves her desk toward ours.
Once everyone is in a group, Ms. Coleman gives the instructions. âFirst I want you to list the communities you belong to,â she says. âAs many as you can think of. Then, in your groups, talk about which communities you and your partners have in common.â
I canât tell if Esme is listening. Sheâs doodling at the edges of her notebook paper. Itâs the same house I saw in the drawing on the Galindosâ porch, with pink and orange roses in the front. This time thereâs a gray cat next to it.
âAll right, everyone,â Ms. Coleman says. âGo ahead and get started, and let me know if you need any help.â
Normally Pablo and I follow directions as carefully as we can. But this might be our only chance to get to know Esme before the tardeada, so we take it.
âI see you like to draw,â Pablo says. âWhat kind of pencils are your favorite? Colored pencils? Mechanical pencils? Grease pencils?â
Esme hesitates. âI donât know,â she mumbles without taking her eyes off her paper. âJust⦠regular pencils, I guess?â
Pablo scribbles something in his notebook.
âWhat about erasers?â I ask. Erasers are very important. They help you fix mistakes.
âUm⦠arenât they all sort of⦠the same?â Esme says. Her voice is so quiet, I can hardly hear her.
Pablo smacks his hands against the desk.
